چکیده

Wireless mesh networks are becoming increasingly popular as a low-cost alternative to wired networks for providing high-speed last mile connectivity. A key challenge in mesh networks is the need for sufficient network capacity to meet the requirements of applications, especially when network density increases over time, and newer applications require higher throughputs. In this paper, we consider some approaches for improving network capacity by exploiting various physical layer capabilities. Specifically, we consider the use of multiple wireless channels, and improving utilization of any given channel by introducing “spatial backoff”, for improving network capacity. Through these example scenarios, we highlight the challenges involved and benefits possible by exploiting physical layer capabilities in mesh networks.

Directional MAC and routing schemes for power controlled Wireless Mesh Networks with adaptive antennas

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have emerged recently as a technology for next-generation wireless networking. Several approaches that exploit directional and adaptive antennas have been proposed in the literature to increase the performance of WMNs. However, while adaptive antennas can improve the wireless medium utilization by reducing radio interference and the impact of the exposed nodes prob...

A Survey on Routing Protocols that really Exploit Wireless Mesh Network Features

The design of a routing protocol that really exploits the specific features of a Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) still remains a challenge. The expected additional benefit, with respect to those that do not or cannot exploit them, is an increase in overall throughput supported by the network. The static and non-power constrained nature of backbone nodes allow offering some exploitable features towa...

Adaptive Sending Rate Over Wireless Mesh Networks Using SNR

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have emerged as a key technology for the next generation of wireless networking. Instead of being another type of ad-hoc networking, WMNs diversify the capabilities of ad-hoc networks. Several protocols that work over WMNs include IEEE 802.11a/b/g, 802.15, 802.16 and LTE-Advanced. To bring about a high throughput under varying conditions, these protocols have to ad...
